September 30th is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day. The intent of this day, as outlined by the Truth & Reconciliation Commission Call to Action #80 is to honour survivors, their families, and communities, and ensure that public commemoration of the history and legacy of residential schools remains a vital component of the reconciliation process.

The following clip of voices from Survivors who guide the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation highlight the importance of our responsibility.

The Truth and Reconciliation Commission principles for reconciliation state that “Reconciliation is a process of healing relationships that requires public truth sharing, apology, and commemoration that acknowledge and redress past harms.”

It is the responsibility of the HDSB community to continue to listen, learn and reflect on the truths that survivors and voices from Indigenous communities share as we carry this learning forward and beyond, September 30th.
